A: Yes, you do have to pay for Release 3.0 and no, you can't just get it from a friend. NeXT says that its licenses from AT&T, Adobe, and Pixar preclude free distribution. If you install only the basic system, however, you can get the developer system at no additional cost from any source you choose. Considering that the 3.0 CD-ROM contains 200MB of software and files, the $295 upgrade price is quite low Ð roughly $1.50 a megabyte.
